THREE RIVERS

Context

Three Rivers South is an unincorporated rural community in Central Oregon located south of Sunriver and north of La Pine, approximately 20 miles south of Bend. The area is defined by an extensive network of waterways, including the Deschutes River, Little Deschutes River, Fall River, and Spring River, which wind through forests of ponderosa and lodgepole pine and give the community its name.

The surrounding landscape has a long history of Indigenous use, followed by exploration, ranching, timber activity, and homesteading during the nineteenth century. One of the area's best-known early homesteads was established nearby along the Little Deschutes River by William and Sadie Vandevert in 1892. Their ranch became a cattle operation, stagecoach stop, post office, and local gathering place at a time when there were few established communities in this portion of Central Oregon.

During the twentieth century, improved highway access, the development of Sunriver beginning in the late 1960s, and increasing interest in outdoor recreation gradually transformed the surrounding area into a mix of rural residences, vacation properties, ranches, and low-density residential communities. Today, Three Rivers retains a distinctly wooded and rural character, with homes integrated into the forest and closely connected to the region's rivers, trails, fishing, and recreational lands. Its proximity to Fall River, the Deschutes National Forest, Sunriver, and the Cascade Lakes makes the area particularly valued for its natural setting and quiet residential character.
